The role Billy Gilmour could play in Chelsea and Manchester United's Declan Rice transfer battle

Declan Rice has been subject of interest from Premier League rivals Manchester United and Chelsea, but where will he end up if he decides to leave West Ham?

The West Ham United midfielder only signed a new contract at the London Stadium in December 2018 but has attracted interest from the two English giants.

Rice has been an ever-present figure in the Hammers’ team this season, making 35 appearances across all competitions.

The 21-year-old could be an ideal long-term replacement for Nemanja Matic, who has reportedly been offered a new two-year deal at Old Trafford.

West Ham fans protest against club's owners

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed earlier this month that the 31-year-old would stay at the Manchester club but an official deal is yet to be announced.

Matic has been an integral part of United's midfield over the years and Rice could be the younger option to replace the Serbian.

The England international has impressed over the past three seasons, with his defensive abilities as well as his calmness and composure in possession.

As it stands, Solskjaer has Fred, Scott McTominay, Paul Pogba and Matic to choose from for his central midfield options.

Pogba’s future at Old Trafford remains uncertain and Rice could be the perfect candidate to play alongside Fred or McTominay.

However, a move to Chelsea would see him join the likes of Jorginho and Billy Gilmour, who both can play in Rice’s position.

Jorginho has enjoyed a very strong season for the Blues and has become more of a fan favourite with each passing game.

Gilmour, 18, has featured in Frank Lampard’s side’s last two games – picking up Man of the Match in both – and he looks like he could be the future of Chelsea’s midfield.

With Lampard’s growing reputation of bringing youngsters through the academy, despite Chelsea’s interest, it could be difficult to fit Rice into the system.

Despite Matic’s resurgence in form recently, it is unrealistic for him to play every game of the season, and having competition in Rice, could bring out the best in both options.
