The Rochdale Canal in Manchester city centre has turned green

Those in charge of the city's canals have said there is 'nothing to worry about' after one of them mysteriously turned green today.

Those who walk down the Rochdale Canal towpath began reporting to the Manchester Evening News earlier that a stretch in the city centre had turned a vivid shade of green.

That sparked bafflement amongst many of those passing earlier.

Due to the torrential the rain that has battered the region over the past 48 hours, it sparked fears of a spillage or leak and that the water had contaminated with chemicals.

Ducks and geese could be swimming in the water when the M.E.N visited earlier.

However the guardian of the canal network have said it is them who had turned the water green.

The Canal and River Trust say engineers are currently carrying out examinations of the stretch off Princess Street heading towards lock 84 and that they used a green dye to check for the leaks.

In a statement they said: “The vibrant green colour is nothing to worry about and will disappear very soon.

"Our local operations and engineering teams have added dye to the water to test for leaks.

"The dye is not at all harmful to the canal or wildlife, and will disperse.”

Engineers say they use the dye as it shows them clearly where water is flowing and can quickly point them to the source of any leak, which can cause big issues in inclement weather.
