The road sign that tells Welsh speakers something entirely different from those who only speak English

People have been left a little confused by a road sign. This sign in Old Conway Road, Mochdre, was placed there by Openreach contractors who are working in the area.

But it seems to suggest different closure dates depending on whether you are reading in English or Welsh, leaving people scratching their heads.

The sign says: "Ffordd yma ar gau o'r 11/04/22 i'r 13/04/22 8am to 5pm." The English translation beneath reads: "This road will be closed 26/04/22 to 27/04/22 8am to 5pm" - some two weeks later. You can get more local news and other story updates by subscribing to our newsletters here.

A baffled resident brought the blunder to the attention of North Wales Live and said: "A road closed warning sign gives two different dates -11/4/22 to 13/4/22 for Welsh people and 26/4/22 to 27/4/22 for English people. Are they trying to confuse us? I just had to take a picture, I thought it so funny." Read here about the mistake on a Welsh road sign that's been spinning people around.

BT Openreach has since apologised for the "muddle" and removed the sign to prevent further confusion. An Openreach spokesperson said: “Thanks to North Wales Live for making us aware of this. We’re sorry for the muddle. We’ve removed the sign for now to avoid confusion, and we’re touching base with our contractors to make sure they display correct dates in future.”

The spokesperson said that the correct date in this instance are between April 26 and 27. The BT representative added that its contractor would be amending and replacing the sign as soon as possible.
