The risk of fungal infection on the skin increases in summer: How to take care of your skin?

The summer season sees a rise in fungal infections due to the warm weather promoting fungal growth. Poor personal hygiene exacerbates this issue, leading to a higher incidence of fungal infections annually. Therefore, people are urged to prioritize their health by maintaining good personal hygiene practices, opting for breathable cotton clothing, and seeking immediate medical attention if they experience any signs of fungal infections.

Summer brings about a rise in common fungal infections, each with its own set of causes. These skin conditions can manifest anywhere on the body, presenting as ringworm, athlete's foot, toenail fungus, yeast infections, skin dryness, prickly heat rashes, or genital rashes. Dermatophyte infections are prevalent and highly contagious and typically appear on areas prone to sweat accumulation, such as the feet (athlete's foot) or regions like the armpits and breasts (tinea corporis). Dermatophyte infections can affect fingernails and toenails, leading to symptoms like pain and swelling to the surrounding skin of toe nail along with yellow discoloration of nail , Ringworm a common skin infection caused by a fungus, tends to thrive in warm and humid environments - making summer the perfect breeding ground for its spread.

The combination of heat and moisture creates an ideal setting for the fungus to grow and quickly spread from person to person. With people spending more time outdoors participating in various activities during the summer months, the chances of coming into contact with ringworm increases significantly. It is highly contagious and can be transmitted through direct skin-to-skin contact or by sharing personal items such as towels or clothing. This means that even a brief encounter with someone who has ringworm can put you at risk of contracting the infection. Another frequently encountered fungal infection is Tinea versicolor, which results in patches of skin either lightened or darkened arising from an overgrowth of skin fungus. Vaginal yeast infections are typically caused by Candida albicans fungus, leading to inflammation and discomfort in the vaginal area. It is the need of the hour to prevent fungal infections during summer by following these vital tips.

Foolproof tricks to safeguard yourself from fungal infections

• During the hot and humid summer months, it's crucial to take extra precautions to prevent fungal infections on your skin. One important tip is to keep your skin clean and dry, especially in areas prone to fungus such as between the toes and under the breasts.

• Wearing loose, breathable clothing made of natural fabrics like cotton can also help reduce moisture build-up, which creates an ideal environment for fungi to thrive. Additionally, using antifungal powders or sprays on sweaty areas can help prevent fungal growth and keep your skin healthy.

• Avoid sharing personal items like towels or razors with others to minimize the risk of spreading fungal infections. It's also essential to change out of wet clothes or swimsuits as soon as possible after swimming or sweating profusely.

• Opt for breathable open-toed footwear such as sandals to keep your feet dry and well-ventilated. When wearing closed shoes, opt for cotton socks to promote air circulation and maintain dryness.

• Refrain from applying scented or chemical products to the affected area, as they may lead to irritation and rashes. Use products recommended by the doctor only.
