The risk of a ‘business as usual’ plan during NHS doctor strike

  • Resident doctors are set to begin a five-day strike from Friday at 7am, marking the 12th such action since March 2023.
  • NHS England has urged the public to continue seeking care, stating that hospitals have plans to minimise disruption and ensure life-saving services.
  • The British Medical Association (BMA) confirmed that talks with the government to avert the strike collapsed due to an unresolved pay dispute, and plans to carry on with business as usual pose a risk to patients.
  • Health Secretary Wes Streeting criticised the strike as "completely unjustified" given a 28.9 per cent pay rise over the last three years.
  • A recent YouGov poll indicates waning public support for the resident doctors' strike, with 52 per cent opposing it.
