The rise of the comfy undie: the best and cosiest styles to shop now

I challenge you to find one word which better summarises your lockdown look than comfortable.

From the slippers you've worn religiously every day since March to the sweatpants that have remained plastered to your legs for the last three months, comfort has reigned supreme.

Where many of our colleagues and friends have perfected the art of the #WFHit - all glowy skin and virtual meeting-friendly collars and blouses - we're yet to escape the confinement of our favourite sweatpants and their counterpart sweater.

The imperative of comfort has even filtered through to our underwear. While at the start of lockdown figures were pointing towards surging sales in sultry lingerie, three months on - and several litres of wine later - and there are signs that we're veering more towards Ye Old Faithful comfy undies.

According to global fashion platform Lyst, searches for 'women's boxer shorts' have seen an increase of 25 per cent in the last two weeks, while sustainable brand Allbirds just last week released its debut underwear collection, which came in four comfort-first styles.

"There’s no doubt we’ve all started buying differently from what we used to as our lifestyle has temporarily changed," explains Heather Gramston, Head of Womenswear Buying at Browns. "Lacey underwear will certainly make a come-back but as of now what’s important is feeling good and most importantly, comfortable."

It would appear that the time is nigh to box up your French lace lingerie sets and your cheesegrater minimal thongs and trade them in for some sturdy and comfortable pants.
