The Rise of Skywalker: Star Wars 9 title revealed at Chicago convention as trailer drops

Star Wars: Episode IX officially has a title – and The Rise of Skywalker is now due to hit cinemas later in the year.

The title was revealed on Friday at the Star Wars Celebration convention in Chicago, during which the film's trailer was also unveiled.

The announcement came after a panel of approximately one hour, which saw host Stephen Colbert chat with Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy, director JJ Abrams, and several cast members.

The title was unveiled at the same time as the trailer, with The Rise of Skywalker being displayed in large letters at the end of the two-minute clip.

Rey (Daisy Ridley), Poe (Oscar Isaac) and Finn (John Boyega) are all back for what has been presented as the final instalment of the saga. Palpatine also appears to be back, judging by his sardonic laugh, which can be heard at the very end of the teaser.

Carrie Fisher, who died in December 2016, also makes an appearance. Some deleted scenes from The Force Awakens have been used to further her character's story.

The Rise of Skywalker is scheduled to hit cinemas on 20 December, 2019.
