The Riff Report: New music this week

THIS WEEK'S KEY RELEASES

Call Super _ "Arpo"

Berlin-based techno producer and DJ Joe Seaton, aka Call Super, is an artist with a distinct vision, one that is recognizably techno but refuses to be bracketed in any common definitions of the term. Taking in grime, house, trance and dubstep, he has carved his own leftfield niche with an innate ability to create his own aural climate. Hugely experimental, his work is unmistakable, as he rolls together winding synths, crisp, clean metallic beats and noises with more organic instrumentation in the form of saxophone and clarinet. _ Paul Carr

Taylor Swift _ "Reputation"

Teen Daze _ "Themes For a New Earth"

VISIONIST _ "No Idols"

This is the best thing I have seen in a while, both seductive and a little frightening, like any leap of faith. It is both a compelling celebration of the human form, identity and desire and the intensity of nature's uncaring demand for survival. The music also reflects an impact between the soulful and gentle sacred spaces of the heart with the jarring industrial world. The sensual, dramatic visuals of the clip pull you in to the degree that it becomes hard to separate the music and video as two distinct entities, something that doesn't often happen anymore. _ Morgan Y. Evans (https://youtu.be/rmt6kxKi4_s)

Lake Jons _ "Colors"

Finnish outfit Lake Jons will issue a full-length album via AntiFragile Music in the United States on Jan. 19, 2018. In the meantime, music lovers can enjoy a new video from the outfit for the track "Colors." Psychedelic, progressive, tuneful with just enough sense of mystery, the tune marks some new territory for the group as guitarist Jaska Stenroth notes. "After our first two EPs we wanted to take our music a little further, bringing together more different kinds of influences to the lo-fi garage sound," he recalls. _ Jedd Beaudoin (https://youtu.be/XjInZBymbXo)

Strangerfamiliar _ "Insecure"

Based in Montreal, Strangerfamiliar, the name under which the enigmatic, esoteric and endlessly intriguing Ilichna Morasky performs, has delivered a new video, "Insecure." Morasky's predilection for the abstract and her ability to provide an understated musical counterpoint to the gut-wrenching emotions behind the track's lyrics are but two of these piece's charms. Her movements in the video are equally integral to our appreciation of the tune's weight. "I'm interested in the symbolism found in the duality of nature," Morasky says. _ JB (https://youtu.be/rEER-hpFESo)

Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats _ "Trying So Hard Not to Know"

Denver's soul/Americana outfit Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats are known for their incendiary live performances, and now Stax Records is set to release an album proving just that. Live at Red Rocks comes out Friday, and it highlights the band's performance skills that have made them festival favorites around the world. The set was recorded on Aug. 21, 2016, when the group performed their first headlining gig at Red Rocks. _ Sarah Zupko (https://youtu.be/AgkBfi7wbao)
