The Rhondda schools closed because of snow on Thursday, April 4

Heavy snow has fallen in parts of Wales this morning, causing difficult driving conditions and closing some schools.

The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning for snow and motorists have been told to avoid mountain roads.

Forecaster Luke Miall said: "It will cause some disruption for the morning commute in certain areas. There could be some minor road closures if it's particularly bad over some of the higher routes."

Temperatures are predicted to struggle to get above 10 or 11C, but it could feel as low as 7 or 8C in the wind and rain.

Forecasters previously said a deep area of low pressure is centred over the UK, bringing with it the potential to drive showers and produce long spells of wet and changeable weather.

Six schools in Rhondda Cynon Taf have closed because of the weather and for the safety of pupils.

They are:

Cwmclydach Primary School

Ferndale Community School

Maerdy Community Primary

Penrhys Primary

Tai Education Centre

Ysgol Nantgwyn

Schools in Powys, Caerphilly and Blaenau Gwent have remained open.

Schools in Merthyr Tydfil are also open, but pupils and staff have been warned to take "extra care" on the paths.
