The Rhino Farm is a captivating book set in Africa which brings to life the awe-inspiring nature of the country, but also the horror and heartlessness of rhino poaching.
When Finn Summers, the teenage son of a vet, travels to Africa to stay with his mother’s friend, he gets an amazing chance to discover the beauty of Africa’s wildlife. However, he finds not everything is this beautiful when he sees a rhino slaughtered for its horn by poachers. With the help of a Chinese billionaire, Finn and the new friends he has made must get the rhinos to safety before any more can be hunted down for their horn.
I think this book is particularly commendable for its efforts to promote awareness of the brutality and pointlessness of rhino poaching. I knew little about the subject before reading the book, but now realise how important it is for poaching to be prevented.
I thought the book was well written and made you want to read on, with the story not being predictable as in some books. I was also interested in the facts about Africa given throughout; some of the African words were foreign to me, but were mostly explained, and added to the setting. The ending was well finished off but also left plenty of space for a sequel, which I would be very keen to read if it is ever written. I really enjoyed reading The Rhino Farm and would definitely recommend it.
