Sometimes, fanfiction becomes its own thing. You have your Fifty Shades of Grey, the After franchise, and then there is The Love Hypothesis. Originally a Star Wars fic, the novel has earned acclaim from readers and is now becoming its own film!
It isn’t rare that fic based on another franchise or property becomes its own film. Case in point: All three listed above. And now with The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood getting its own adaptation, fans have a lot of feelings on the casting. You’re not getting the Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver reunion you wanted but it does have its own tie to Star Wars and honestly? It’s kind of funny.
It was announced that Riverdale star Lili Reinhart was taking on the role of Olive Smith. Olive is a biology PhD candidate and she is in a fake relationship with Dr. Adam Carlsen. The two are trying to convince everyone around them that they’re in love. It is Olive’s way of convincing her friend Anh that she’s happy but when she panics and kisses the first man she sees: Adam.
The rest of the synopsis on GoodReads is as follows: “That man is none other than Adam Carlsen, a young hotshot professor—and well-known ass. Which is why Olive is positively floored when Stanford’s reigning lab tyrant agrees to keep her charade a secret and be her fake boyfriend. And when a big science conference goes haywire, putting Olive’s career on the Bunsen burner, Adam surprises her again with his unyielding support and even more unyielding. . . six-pack abs. Suddenly their little experiment feels dangerously close to combustion. And Olive discovers that the only thing more complicated than a hypothesis on love is putting her own heart under the microscope.”
So…the casting of Adam is important and ultimately hilarious as Tom Bateman has been cast as Dr. Adam Carlsen. You know, Daisy Ridley’s husband.
Would it have been funny to have Ridley and Driver play the roles? Sure. I did not see a world where that happened but it would have be funny anyway. But having Bateman, a great actor, take on the role of Adam is kind of kismet. Especially since he is married to Ridley.
As someone who hasn’t yet read the book, I am excited to dive into the story but you know someone in that casting department had a lot of fun with this one.
