The revamped Swansea shopping centre where half the units are empty is now losing Mothercare

Swansea's revamped Parc Tawe shopping centre has been dealt another blow with the news that Mothercare is set to close all of its UK stores.

But the company behind the retail park has insisted its continued success remains a priority.

Hammerson has issued a statement following an announcement that the mother and baby retailer is to close all of its 79 shops , putting 2,500 jobs at risk just weeks before Christmas.

The news came as the mother and baby retailer revealed it was holding last-ditch talks with potential partners as it battled to keep its brand in the UK, and had raised £3.2 million from shareholders.

Mothercare has been a mainstay of Parc Tawe for generations, and its departure will come at an unwelcome time for the shopping centre, which currently has 10 empty units - half of the 20 which currently make up the retail park.

A revamp of the retail park took place in January, 2017, and got off to a promising start, with big names arriving including Denny's American Diner and a Costa drive-thru, which joined the likes of long-time occupants Odeon and Plantasia.

Since then, things have slowed down significantly, but Hammerson has indicated there are promising signs around the corner, with "advanced discussions" in place for a new permanent tenant to move into the vacant former Toys R Us store, which has been occupied on a temporary basis by Circus Eruption since January.

Swansea has a number of empty shops, although many parts have high occupancy rates:

Tiffins Indian Buffet is also coming soon, and will be located next door to Denny's.

Director of retail parks at Hammerson, Andrew Berger-North, said: “Our priority is ensuring Parc Tawe remains a successful and popular retail and leisure destination.

"Following the announcement that Mothercare has appointed administrators, we will continue to explore opportunities for new brands to join the line-up.

"We are in advanced discussions on the former Toys R Us unit, and recently welcomed Tiffins Indian Buffet to one of the restaurant units.”
