What results do Cardiff City, Swansea and Nottingham Forest need for a Championship play-off spot plus goal difference explained

Cardiff City and Swansea City both harbour hopes of securing a Championship play-off spot on the final day of the 2019/20 regular season on Wednesday evening.

Here's the current state of play in the division, as well as the scenarios which need to pan out for the Welsh clubs to finish in the top six.

How the play-off race currently looks

Leeds have been crowned champions while Brentford and Fulham have already secured play-off spots, although both are in with a shout of automatic promotion, with West Brom currently in second.

But here's how the picture looks as far as the remaining places in the top six are concerned:

5 Nottingham Forest - P 45; GS 57; GA 46; GD +11; Pts 70

6 Cardiff City - P 45; GS 65; GA 58; GD +7; Pts 70

7 Swansea City - P 45; GS 58; GA 52; GD +6; Pts 67

(P = Played; GS = Goals scored; GA = Goals against; GD = Goal difference; Pts = Points)

Teams are separated on points gained, then goal difference, then goals scored and then their head-to-head record from the current season.

The key top six fixtures

  • Cardiff City v Hull City
  • Reading v Swansea City
  • Nottingham Forest v Stoke City

(All matches kick-off at 7:30pm on Wednesday)

What Cardiff City need for a play-off spot:

The Bluebirds could yet finish in fifth place while they could also miss out on the top six altogether, although the latter seems highly unlikely given their advantage going into the 46th and final round of fixtures of the regular season.

Cardiff will clinch a play-off place if...

  • They win or draw against Hull.
  • Swansea fail to beat Reading.
  • They lose, Swansea win - and secure a five goal swing against Forest in the process - and Nottingham Forest lose, with a four goal swing against Forest in Cardiff's favour in the process.

What Swansea City need for a play-off spot:

Steve Cooper's men quite simply have to secure all three points at the Madejski Stadium to stand any chance, and even then they'll need a favour from elsewhere.

Swansea will finish in the top six if...

  • They win and Cardiff lose.
  • They win and Nottingham Forest lose, with a five goal swing against Forest required in Swansea's favour.

What needs to happen for both Welsh clubs to finish in the top six:

Yes, it can still happen, although it's extremely unlikely.

Swansea would have to beat Reading and overturn a five-goal deficit to Forest who would have to lose to Stoke City. In this situation, just one point for Cardiff would ensure both they and Swansea finish in the top six. In this scenario, it could also happen if the Bluebirds lost to Hull, although they would have to overturn a four-goal deficit with Forest in the process.

Top six finish odds

  • Nottingham Forest 1/250
  • Cardiff City 1/25
  • Swansea City 9/1
