The remarkable Lionel Messi record that gives Liverpool hope in Champions League showdown with Barcelona

Watching their team taking on Lionel Messi and Barcelona at Camp Nou is already a mouthwatering prospect for Liverpool supporters.

And history may well be on the side of Jurgen Klopp 's men – in more ways than one.

Liverpool travel to Catalonia for the first leg of their Champions League semi-final on Wednesday, May 1 .

They go there as still the only English team to win at Camp Nou in 41 attempts.

In fact, Liverpool have won there twice , John Toshack's goal earning a 1-0 UEFA Cup semi-final triumph in 1976 while in the Champions League first knockout round in 2007, Craig Bellamy and John Arne Riise scored in a 2-1 away win.

Messi was a mere 19-year-old pup when famously marked out of the game by Alvaro Arbeloa in that second encounter.

Remarkably, though, it remains the only Champions League knockout match in which he has finished on the losing side at Camp Nou.

Messi has featured in 31 such matches, on the winning side on 22 occasions with eight draws.

And since making his debut in 2004, the only other home knockout game Barcelona have lost was a 3-0 reverse to Bayern Munich in 2013 when Messi was rested after the Spanish side lost the first leg 4-0 to the eventual winners.
