Redskins knock Dolphins out of bottom spot in USA TODAY power rankings

They finally did it — the Washington Redskins fell to the bottom spot in USA TODAY’s NFL power rankings.

Just days after firing head coach Jay Gruden and promoting offensive line coach Bill Callahan in the interim, the Redskins have at long last surrounded themselves in enough turmoil to be considered worse than the Miami Dolphins by a major media outlet. It’s an accomplishment, in a sense.

Here’s what USA TODAY had to say:

This is not a franchise that’s one great coach away from a turnaround. They’ve mishandled player situations from Trent Williams to Dwayne Haskins, their defense is underperforming severely, and even when Haskins is ready for the rigors of the NFL, it’s legitimate to wonder who’s going to be around him. As has been the case through most of Dan Snyder’s tenure, the Redskins move from one disaster to another.

Coincidentally, the Dolphins and Redskins will face off this week in a matchup between winless teams that likely nobody in the nation will care to watch. While there are no playoff implications, it will be interesting to see who comes out on top, as the loser gets a head start in the race to the bottom for a top draft pick —something that Miami admits it is trying for, and something that Washington needs to consider.
