The Redskins should look to acquire Trey Burton, the newest free-agent TE

While nearly everyone’s mind is on the upcoming NFL Draft, another veteran tight end has now landed on the free agency market. A tight end that might make sense for the Washington Redskins to take a look at.

The Chicago Bears released TE Trey Burton on Friday, ending his two-year career in the Windy City. Before he was with the Bears, Burton spent four years with the Philadelphia Eagles. In total, he’s played for six years in the NFL, scoring a total of 12 touchdowns in that time.

And now he is on the open market, and it might make sense for the Redskins to make him an offer to come to Washington. Though Burton spent part of the 2019 season sidelined due to injury, he has been a solid player in the NFL, and he currently has more experience and production than any other TE on the roster in Washington. Assuming that he is able to recover quickly and get back to full strength, there is no reason why Burton can’t eventually return to the form we saw in 2017 and 2018, where he totaled 11 touchdowns across the two seasons, to go along with over 800 yards receiving.

Burton might have a few bidders going after him, but nobody stands to gain as much as the Redskins should they bring him in. If Burton can slot in as the TE1 for 2020, and Washington remains intent on drafting a young TE next week as well, the offense looks a heck of a lot better when the season rolls around.
