The Reds ripped off the Braves’ ‘Beat the Freeze’ and now they need to race

They say imitation is a form of flattery, and when it comes to the in-game promotional gimmicks, there’s plenty of imitation across baseball.

It was only a matter of time until another team saw the success of the Atlanta Braves’ “Beat the Freeze” promotion and took the idea for their own.

That team appears to be the Cincinnati Reds.

Earlier this month, the MLB Twitter page tweeted a video of the Reds’ “Stache Dash” promotion, which basically took the same concept as the Braves’ Freeze except the speedster was wearing an old-school Reds uniform and a fake mustache. On Tuesday, the Braves broadcast took notice to the promotion.

They were not particularly pleased to be ripped off.

There’s only one way to settle this: The Reds and the Braves need to have a race.

While matters may be complicated a bit by the Reds not having a single, designated Stache Dasher (there seems to be a rotation), the Freeze didn’t seem particularly concerned about the competition. He tweeted some trash talk to the MLB account.

But this race would be entertaining. The Reds return to Atlanta for their series in August, and that gives them plenty of time to organize the one-on-one race at SunTrust Park. Make it happen.

Personally, I think the Freeze is clearly faster.

But there’s only one way to settle it. They need to race.
