Devised by award-winning playwright Verity Laughton, The Red Cross Letters is a verbatim theatre piece that incorporates material from the letters sent to the South Australian Red Cross information bureau during the first world war. More than 8,000 case files from the State Library of South Australia have been digitised and released, and they provide the stimulus for the theatre piece.
The play is a moving insight into the human cost of the war, and brings the experiences of soldiers, military commanders and medical staff to life on stage. Andy Packer directs the interpretation, set against projections of period photographs and a live score performed by Matthew Gregan.
