The records that prove Patrick Bamford is the man to fire Leeds United to the Premier League

It's crunch time for Leeds United in their hunt for promotion to the Premier League as, following this weekend's Yorkshire derby against Huddersfield Town, the amount of games remaining this season will hit single figures.

An upturn in form in recent weeks has seen Marcelo Bielsa's side hit their stride at the perfect time, opening up a five-point lead in the push for automatic promotion and sitting just a single point behind leaders West Brom.

The biggest improvement during that run has been the defensive stability that has been found, with the club not conceding a single goal in their last four matches.

However, three of those wins have been by a one-goal margin and the a big concern heading into the season finale is Patrick Bamford's form in front of goal.

12 goals for Bamford this season has seen him hit his best return since scoring 17 while on loan at Middlesbrough in the 2014/15 season, but his only two goals in 2020 have come in the 3-2 win over Millwall.

With loanee Jean-Kevin Augustin sidelined through injury, Bamford's run of seven matches without a goal may concern the fans and Bielsa himself - but his record in previous seasons provides signs of encouragement.

Last season, four of Bamford's nine goals in the league came during the final 10 matches of the regular season - and the striker missed the final game of the season through suspension.

In 2017/18, when Bamford was at Middlesbrough, it is a similar scenario. He scored a total of 11 matches that season, four of which came in the final 10 matches of the campaign and, once again, he didn't feature in one of those games.

During the 2016/17 season, where Bamford played in the Premier League for the Teesside outfit in the second half of the campaign, his only goal in the top-flight came during the run-in at the end of the season.

And that trend stretches back even further, with six of his 17 goals in the 2014-15 season and three of his eight goals in the 2013/14 season coming during the final 10 matches.

All in all, that means that 18 of Bamford's 46 league goals since the 2013/14 season have come during the final 10 matches of the campaign - which equates to 39.1%.

That shows that Bamford can be relied upon heading into the final months of the season, with it suggesting that he will hit a decent return of goals during the run-in for Leeds.

While the numbers are not earth-shattering, it does provide comfort for the squad and supporters, who are desperate to seal a return to the Premier League.
