The record Shola Shoretire set when making Manchester United debut

Shola Shoretire set a Manchester United club record over the weekend as he donned the highest shirt number ever worn by a United player in a competitive men's first-team match.

The 17-year-old made his senior United debut in the 3-1 victory over Newcastle at Old Trafford in the Premier League, coming off the bench late on to replace Marcus Rashford.

In doing so, he became the seventh-youngest player to represent United in the club's history - and second-youngest behind Angel Gomes in the Premier League era.

He sported the number 74 shirt against Newcastle, which is the highest squad number ever worn by a United player in a competitive fixture.

The previous highest was 71 - worn by another academy product, Teden Mengi, against LASK in last season's Europa League.

United Women have a player who wears a higher number than Shoretire - Tobin Heath dons the number 77 shirt.

Meanwhile, the highest squad number used in a men's Premier League match is 87. That honour went to Arsenal's Bukayo Saka in January 2019.
