The record in sight for Crystal Palace ace Luka Milivojevic ahead of Newcastle United test

It has been a good season for Crystal Palace captain Luka Milivojevic so far, with ten goals to his name.

The Palace midfielder is currently the Eagles' top scorer, being the only player into double figures at the club at the moment.

Nine of those goals have come from the penalty spot, with the Serbian midfielder scoring nine of his ten penalties so far this season for the Eagles.

With six games to go, he could yet add to that tally, and he is now within two penalties of the record for the most successful penalty kicks in a season.

As confirmed by Sky Sports' commentator Martin Tyler, Milivojevic is currently fifth overall for the number of penalties scored in a single season, with nine.

Former Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer, former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard and ex-Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard are currently ahead of him with ten penalties each - in the 1994/95, 2009/10 and 2013/14 seasons respectively.

But the man ahead of all of them is a former Palace star, with ex-Eagle Andrew Johnson currently holding the record in the Premier League era, with 11 successful penalties in the 2004/05 season.

Johnson scored 21 goals for the Eagles that season, with 11 of those coming from the spot, although Palace were ultimately relegated from the top flight.

However, his record is now within sight for Palace midfielder Milivojevic, ahead of the Eagles' game against Newcastle United this weekend.

Milivojevic needs one more successful spot kick to join Shearer, Lampard and Gerrard on ten for a season, two to draw level with Johnson, and three to set a new record.

The 27-year-old has scored five penalties so far in 2019, with his last coming in the 2-0 win against Huddersfield Town at Selhurst Park on Saturday.
