The record-breaking TV audience that tuned in for England's 2-1 win over Scotland at the Women's World Cup

England's 2-1 win over Scotland in their World Cup opener on Sunday night was the UK's most watched women's football game of all time, it's been confirmed.

Phil Neville's side cruised past the Scots in the first half, picking up an early lead as Nikita Parris was the first to score from the penalty spot following a VAR decision, while striker Ellen White doubled the Lionesses' lead minutes before the break to put England at 2-0.

But Shelley Kerr's side piled on the pressure in the second half to allow Claire Emslie to score Scotland's first World Cup goal in the 78th minute, reducing the deficit to a single goal.

Now, BBC viewing figures confirm the match made history as the UK's most watched women's football game.

It drew in a peak audience of 6.1m viewers on BBC One, while the figure - 37.8% of the available audience - broke the previous record of 4m viewers for England's semi-final against the Netherlands in the 2017 Euros.

England now travel to Le Havre to face Argentina on Friday, June 14, before returning to Nice to play Japan on Wednesday, June 19.
