The reception Palace striker Christian Benteke can expect from Aston Villa fans at Selhurst Park

It has not been a successful time at Crystal Palace for Christian Benteke in front of goal in the past couple of seasons.

The Belgian international has scored just four times in his last 51 Premier League appearances for the Eagles , having netted 17 goals in his first season in south London following his move from Liverpool in 2016.

He only had one year on Merseyside, where he scored ten goals in 42 appearances, before signing for the Eagles in August 2016, during Alan Pardew's time in charge at Palace.

But after a positive first season in south London, with 15 goals in the Premier League and two more in the FA Cup, he has struggled for form amid a number of injury setbacks in the past two campaigns.

He netted just three times in 30 appearances in 2017-18, and just once in 16 Premier League appearances last season, but he had a positive pre-season this summer and has shown signs of returning to form.

He is yet to score in four games in all competitions this season, with Benteke hitting the crossbar in the Carabao Cup tie against Colchester United in midweek.

So is the scene set for his first goal of the season against his old club Aston Villa this weekend?

Palace fans will certainly hope so, and Birmingham Live's Aston Villa reporter Ashley Preece can see it happening, although he is confident that the 28-year-old will be given a good reception from the travelling supporters at Selhurst Park tomorrow (Saturday).

"I'm gutted for him. I cannot understand it, the guy fired in 49 goals in 101 games for Villa in three years. He was a beast," he said.

"I guess it's because the likes of [Wilfried] Zaha and [Andros] Townsend dally on the ball a bit too much instead of delivering instant crosses into the box.

"I noticed he couldn't even score against League Two Colchester on Tuesday night - watch him notch his first at Selhurst in 16 months against... Aston Villa. He'll get a warm reception, make no mistake about that. Fans will clap his name when it gets announced."
