The reasons why Mesut Ozil and Nacho Monreal were not involved for Arsenal at Leicester

Injuries to Mesut Ozil and Nacho Monreal meant the pair were unable to play for Arsenal in the crucial clash against Leicester on Sunday lunchtime at the King Power Stadium.

The pair were both missing from the matchday squad, having both featured in the Gunners' 3-1 defeat at Wolves in midweek.

But Ozil suffered a bruised foot in training which resulted in the creative midfielder missing the must-win match, while left-back Monreal picked up a calf injury this week.

'Some sort of sick joke' - Arsenal fans are fuming over Unai Emery's lineup at Leicester

Ozil has appeared in 23 league matches for Arsenal this season and 31 in total, scoring a total of six goals.

But a club source told football.london that both players are expected to be fit for the Europa League semi-final first leg against Valencia at the Emirates on Thursday evening.

Gunners boss Unai Emery opted to replace the German World Cup winner with Alex Iwobi on the left side of midifield in an attacking trident consisting of a fit-again Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan supporting Alex Lacazette up front as the lone striker.

The incredible stats that prove Ryan Fraser would be a perfect signing for Arsenal

Sead Kolasinac started on the left side of defence with Sokratis and Mustafi as the centre-backs with Ainsley Maitland-Niles on the right, although he was sent off in the first half of the game.

With the Gunners left with only two league games after Sunday, against Brighton and Hove Albion in North London next Sunday and a trip to Turf Moor to face Sean Dyche's Burnley on the final weekend of the season, a good performance against Brendan Rodgers' Foxes would boost their chances of finishing in the top four, and with it qualification for next season's Champions League.
