The reasons why Matthijs de Ligt's big-money summer transfer will not be to Liverpool

Liverpool won't be making a move for Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt this transfer window.

The Reds continue to be linked with a big-money deal for the 19-year-old defender, who is also the subject of strong reported interest from Manchester United and Barcelona.

De Ligt is certain to leave Ajax this summer and will step up his efforts to find his next destination when the Netherlands conclude their UEFA Nations League campaign against Portugal in Sunday's final.

The Ajax captain has become one of the most sought after talents in world football after leading Ajax to within a whisker of the Champions League final last month.

However, Liverpool will not be in the running for the Dutch defender's signature , despite reports claiming the club would have to break their wage structure to land the talented teen.

A report in The Mirror on Sunday suggested the player's agent, Mino Raiola, is demanding his client be paid close to around £250,000-a-week, who ever he signs for this window.

That figure would dwarf the £200,000 Mohamed Salah - the club's highest earner - is believed to be paid at Anfield and would make De Ligt the subject of the most lucrative contract in Reds history.

It's also been previously suggested that any transfer involving De Ligt would be upwards of £60million and Ajax will be determined to extract top dollar for one of the brightest young footballers in the world.

The ECHO understands that is not a prospect Liverpool are considering and Jurgen Klopp is more than happy with his current options in the centre of his defence.

The Reds finished their Premier League season with a 97-point haul and the best defensive record in the division, keeping 21 clean sheets in total and shipping just 22 goals.

Dejan Lovren was arguably Liverpool's best performer in the Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid in Kiev 13 months ago before the Croatian proved himself to be invaluable to his nation's charge to last summer's World Cup final.

Joe Gomez then enjoyed a superb first-half of last term before a leg fracture at Burnley handed the chance to Joel Matip to shine after Christmas.

Matip's superlative form saw him keep his place alongside Virgil van Dijk as Liverpool secured their sixth European Cup with a 2-0 win over Tottenham in last Saturday's Champions League final.

As such, Klopp's centre-back options are ample and the Reds boss sees little value in chasing a mega-money move for De Ligt.

The club have spent nearly £250m since January 2018 and a more reserved and subdued summer transfer window is expected over the next two months.

As the ECHO reported earlier this year , Klopp is not looking to spend huge amounts in the market this time around, with the German merely happy to tweak his Champions League-winning squad.

The Reds finished their Premier League campaign with a club-record 97 points last term and Klopp believes only minor surgery is needed in his ranks this transfer window.

That means a spending spree akin to last summer's £170million splurge on Alisson, Fabinho, Xherdan Shaqiri and Naby Keita won't be repeated this time around.
