The reason why you may have heard roaring planes flying low over Edinburgh yesterday

If you were left confused by a roaring plane which felt as if it could be hovering directly above your roof yesterday in Edinburgh, then here's the answer.

According to a global flight tracking service, a low flying RAF plane was circling near Edinburgh Airport until around 5pm.

But there's no need to be concerned as the RAF confirmed it was military aircraft carrying out essential training within the vicinity of the capital.

The reason it was so loud was that you wear hearing once of the force's huge A400M Atlas aircraft overhead, which were also snapped jetting over West Lothian last week.

In a statement on Twitter, a spokesperson for RAF Brize Norton said on Monday: "This afternoon, our A400M aircraft will be operating in the vicinity of Gatwick, Shoreham and Edinburgh, whilst engaged in essential training.

"These are necessary, routine, flights and not connected with RAF support to the UK's fight against Coronavirus."
