The reason why Wolves decided to allow Matt Doherty to seal Tottenham summer transfer

Matt Doherty is now officially a Tottenham player after completing his move from Wolves.

Amid talk that Jose Mourinho would target Norwich City's Max Aarons as the man to give the team a much-needed upgrade at right-back, he instead moved for the Republic of Ireland international.

A key part of Wolves' team in the Championship, Doherty has excelled in the Premier League and has registered 15 goals and 15 assists in all competitions since their promotion to the top flight back in 2018.

The 28-year-old has signed a four year-contract at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and will wear the No.2 shirt.

Given the surprise of Wolves electing to sell Doherty despite his stunning form over the past two campaigns, chairman Jeff Shi has opened up on the decision to allow him to depart after 10 years at Molineux.

“Matt has been a fantastic player for Wolves over the years, and as a member of the illustrious ‘300 club’ will forever have a place in its history," he told Wolves' official website.

“His departure was not something we had planned ahead of the summer, but when the offer came in, we discussed and analysed it deeply with the coaching team and the board. We also spoke to Matt who was eager to move onto a new chapter in his career.

“Ultimately, we believe that this transfer is in the best interests of the club, and it goes without saying that Matt leaves with our best wishes.

“We thank him for his undoubtable contribution during his time here and wish him the very best of luck for the future.”

Doherty is now in line to make his Spurs debut in the Premier League opener against Everton on Sunday, September 13.
