The reason why Thomas Partey uses his first name on the back of his Arsenal shirt

Thomas Partey has garnered a lot of excitement from Arsenal fans ever since his £45m transfer from Atletico Madrid was confirmed.

A deadline day signing after chasing the 27-year-old for what felt like the entire summer, the announcement on the Gunners' Twitter account had the 'NoThomasNoPartey' hashtag and that can also be seen in most posts regarding the new arrival.

Furthermore, the phrase 'It's Partey Time!' has become popular amongst Arsenal fans.

The type of midfielder Partey is and whether Aouar was the better option

However, one place where the name Partey is not seen is on the midfielder's shirt - either when he plays for Ghana or soon to be for Arsenal.

Rather than his surname, as is customary with footballers, above the Ghana international's number on the back of his shirt lies his first name, 'Thomas'.

He has used his first name on shirts throughout his professional career, having also opted for it during his time at Atletico Madrid as well as loan spells at Mallorca and Almeria.

With that said, Partey is not the only Premier League player who has taken this approach.

Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk has 'Virgil' on his shirt, Dele Alli no longer has 'Alli' on his Tottenham shirt and Sergio Aguero has the nickname 'Kun Aguero' on his Manchester City shirt.

And the reason Partey has done so is rather straightforward.

"Yeah! I’ve seen that there are Partey’s everywhere and even the photographer asked me why I don’t use Partey on my shirt and I said it’s because I started with Thomas and people are familiar with Thomas, so I need to go with Thomas," he explained.

Partey is now poised for his first Arsenal training session.

After playing 90 minutes last Friday in a 3-0 loss at the hands of Mali, Partey was back in action on Monday evening as he recorded two assists in a 5-1 win against Qatar.

Clips of the goals, and Partey's role in them, were shared on the Arsenal Reddit page, leading to even more excitement about his first training session and potential debut against Manchester City this weekend.
