The reason why the VAR decision over Arsenal's retaken penalty vs Norwich City was 'correct'

The decision for Arsenal's penalty against Norwich City to be retaken was "correct", according to a statement clarifying the incident.

The Gunners drew 2-2 with Norwich at Carrow Road in interim Arsenal head coach Freddie Ljungberg's first game in charge, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scoring both goals for the north London side.

His first was a penalty that was retaken after the video assistant referee (VAR) spotted encroachment in his first attempt, which was saved by Norwich goalkeeper Tim Krul and cleared by Canaries defender Max Aarons.

Norwich were left to rue the decision as they twice led in the game, only for Arsenal to come back and claim a point.

But Sky Sports chief reporter Bryan Swanson has reported via social media that a statement has been made by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) clarifying why the penalty was retaken, setting out the reason for it being the "correct decision."

Freddie Ljungberg's first press conference as Arsenal boss in full

"In the 24th minute of Norwich City vs Arsenal, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's penalty was saved by Tim Krul and Norwich defender Max Aarons cleared the rebound," the statement read.

"The VAR identified that both Aarons and Arsenal players had encroached inside the penalty area before the ball was kicked and because Aarons' encroachment had a material impact, the VAR correctly advised the referee that the penalty should be retaken."
