The reason why the Queen wears green for special occasions

When it comes to colour, there are not many that are out of bounds for the Queen, but looking back over the decades of her reign, green is obviously a firm favourite. She is often pictured in the colour and wore a green outfit to Harry and Meghan's wedding and on her last public appearance at Prince Philip's memorial. Psychologists have said the reason why she wears "powerful and confident" green to her most important working engagements indicates she is "in control" and not swayed by the opinions of others, while it has been revealed that she sometimes picks a bright shade of the colour to stand out in the crowds.

It is also a colour she has worn over the decades:

In the documentary The Queen at 90, the Countess of Wessex explained that the queen wears lime green to ensure that people can spot her in the crowds. "She needs to stand out for people to be able to say "I saw the Queen", the Countess said. "Don't forget that when she turns up somewhere, the crowds are two, three, four, ten, 15 deep and someone wants to be able to say they saw a bit of the Queen's hat as she went past."

There was also a poignant reason why the Queen wore the colour to the Service of Thanksgiving for Prince Philip at Westminster Abbey in London, earlier this year. Instead of wearing black, as might be expected for a memorial service, she wore a forest green dress coat and matching hat.

There was a touching and sentimental reason why. The colour, known as 'Edinburgh Green', was Philip’s official livery colour. The duke was well-known for his love of the colour. Princess Anne and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, joined her in wearing the same colour.

Psychologist Lee Chambers told the Daily Mail: "When we wear green, we are conveying a message that we are calmly confident, approachable and peaceful to be around. The balance green has is important, as it also exudes an element of compassion while bringing a feeling of energy and optimism to those you encounter."
