The reason why the police helicopter was hovering over Mumbles for hours last night

There was a major operation in Mumbles on Tuesday night (November 11) involving people on the ground and in the air.

A number of people reported hearing a helicopter hovering above their homes and seeing it shining lights down on the coastline.

The reason was a report of a missing man in Mumbles. The police joined forces with coastguard crews to scour the area by foot as part of an extensive search which started at around 5pm. They were assisted from the air by the police helicopter.

A South Wales Police spokesman said: “We received a report of a missing man from Swansea at about 5pm on Tuesday.

“We were concerned for his welfare and carried out an extensive search along with the police helicopter and coastguard.

“He was located safe and well at around 9.30pm.”

A coastguard spokesman said they were alerted by the police over the disappearance of the man just over an hour after the initial report.

He said: “We assisted the police with a search, we sent a team there to assist the police. We attended at 6.15pm as it was a missing person.

“The man was found safe and well by police in the local area of Mumbles.”

He added: “We had men on the ground searching - we did not have water bound assets searching.”
