The reason why the fire and rescue boat was spotted on the River Tyne

A man in distress prompted a major emergency response on the River Tyne on Monday.

Police received a call at 10.47am on Monday reporting concern for a man who was on the wrong side of railings near The Customs House, in South Shields.

Two fire crews from Hebburn and South Shields were dispatched to the scene.

An additional crew from Byker were requested to launch the Fire Rescue Boat on Newcastle Quayside as a precaution.

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: "We were called out following concern for a man near Customs House in South Shields.

"We dispatched crews from Hebburn and South Shields while a crew from Byker also provided support from the water.

"The incident has been brought to a safe conclusion and the man is now with the police."

Specialist officers were deployed to speak to the man who was brought to safety at around 11.20am.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "At 10.47am today (Monday), police received a report of concern for a man near The Customs House, South Shields.

"Officers attended and the man was brought to safety at around 11.20am."
