The reason why Swansea Airport has been closed and may not open again until the middle of next month

Swansea Airport has been forced to close as a result of "management changes", its proprietor has said.

The Fairwood Common airport closed on September 21, and is expected to remain so until October 13. What this means is that it will be closed as a licensed airport until that date, with its aerodrome shut, but it still has a capacity for private flyers with a signed out of hours indemnity to be able to use it.

Swansea Airport proprietor Roy Thomas said: "We have had to close because of management changes which has involved training in order to be complicit. It will be closed until October 13 but we are hoping we will be able to open before that." For more stories about the Gower area click here.

The closure has caused some disruption for businesses which use the airport to carry out experience days, and one owner told us they would be temporarily extending all gift vouchers for those who owned them, with hopes that they would be able to redeem them as soon as possible once the issues had been resolved.

Earlier this month, we reported how it was raised in a Swansea Council meeting that Mr Thomas was investing £200,000 in one of the runways at the airport over the course of the next year.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) suspended the airport's licence in 2019 for a time after a safety audit identified a number of concerns.

Aerodromes like Swansea's need a licence if they are used by paying passengers or for commercial activities.

The airport has been subsidised for years by Mr Thomas, who once set up a passenger flight service from Swansea called Air Wales. The flights stopped in 2004.

The CAA has been contacted for comment.
