The reason why it is not actually Boxing Day today

Whilst many friends and family gather to celebrate Boxing Day and finish off leftover turkey across the UK, many of them are doing so on the wrong day.

Boxing Day has been a bank holiday since 1871, having this status during the height of the British Empire.

This means the tradition of celebration and eating is popular across the world.

However, due to the bank holiday falling on a Sunday this year, Boxing Day instead shifts over to the following day.

Shoppers and sports fans often wait in anticipation for the day, with the post-Christmas sales and full fixture lists normally on the agenda.

But this year it is actually tomorrow - Monday, December 27 - that marks the official date for the holiday this year.

This applies if the date was to fall on a Saturday too, with the day being shifted to the next working day.

The good news is that it means an extended festive period is provided for many.

It is the first time since 2010 that the UK has been able to celebrate two extra days off following on from Christmas day.

If that wasn't enough, New Year’s Day – also a national bank holiday – falls on Saturday this year, so workers will be given an additional holiday on Monday, January 3.

Despite rumours, the celebration actually got its name from when the rich used to box up gifts to give to those less fortunate in the 19th century.

Nice touch it would seem, when people such as postmen, errand boys and servants would receive a special Christmas box from their employers.
