The reason why hundreds of Glasgow tenement window frames are painted green

Have you ever noticed that loads of Glasgow tenement windows are painted a deep dark green?

From Dennistoun to Pollokshields, windows are all the same shade of emerald green - and there's a reason for it.

After much research, Glasgow Live can reveal that the green used for tenement windows is a post war trend and is known as Corporation Green as it was used by the council on buildings it owned, the Glasgow Conservation Trust West website writes.

It was not, however used on all tenements originally.

Emma Inglis, the curator from the Tenement House and National Trust for Scotland, told Glasgow Live:

"Originally, windows in the West End were usually painted black, often with white edging. After the war, "corporation green" became a common colour.

"Most terraces or tenement blocks have a distinctive window colour.

"This black with white edging can be seen in other areas of the city, as well as plain black paint, dark brown, and, occasionally lighter colours.

"A hunt through the Virtual Mitchell highlights some of these differences. See Woodlands as compared with Dennistoun for example.

"In our own experience at the Tenement House a stone colour appears to have been used in the early years on the back windows at least, which accords with images of the back courts of other blocks.

"Unfortunately, I have been unable to find any paint reports on the front windows to confirm whether they were the same colour, have always been green, or otherwise. It is something for us to follow up one day."

So there you have it!
