The reason why equipment appeared to show mystery earthquake in Donegal overnight

Confusing scientific readings led some to believe a mini-earthquake or "seismic event" occurred off Donegal's coast on Monday night.

Brendan O'Donoghoe tweeted that a seismic event was picked up by the measuring equipment at St Columba's College in Stranorlar at 11pm last night.

This led to locals enquiring if anyone actually felt anything with the readings resembling a sizeable shake.

However, further readings showed that the event wasn't so local after all and it instead picked up an earthquake on the border of Argentina and Chile.

Speaking on Highland Radio this morning, Brendan O'Donoghue said the reality was a lesson in science.

Mr O'Donoghue said: "Sometimes you see what you want to see, a warning to scientists I suppose, but I have confirmation now from the national seismic network the time stamp matches the arrival of waves from the Argentina - Chile border region.

"These earthquakes sometimes are very, very deep where the Pacific plate is diving underneath the South American plate.

"And this event was nearly 150km below the earth's surface and the signal that gives sometimes mimics the P waves of a local event.

"I was fooled into thinking it was a local event. Not a local event at all."

He later tweeted: "Update on last night's event. More data is in now, and it has resulted in a lesson about the nature of science.

"Two simultaneous, deep events in Siberia and Argentina gave a strong signal that from here resembled a weaker local event. It is easy to fool yourself, as Feynman said."
