The reason why Crystal Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey escaped punishment from the FA

Wayne Hennessey escaped punishment for an alleged 'Nazi salute' because he didn't know what it was, according to a Football Association panel.

The charge against the Crystal palace goalkeeper was not proven meaning that the 32-year-old will not be punished.

In a published document by the regulatory commission, it says that two members of the three-man panel believe that the photograph had been 'misinterpreted'.

Hennessey denied the charge, calling the resemblance to the Nazi gesture 'absolutely coincidental'.

The goalkeeper said he "waved and shouted at the person taking the picture to get on with it" and "put my hand over my mouth to make the sound carry".

The panel said that Hennessey was 'able to corroborate' his version of events after submitting photographs of him making similar gestures during matches to the one made in the photo in question.

Premier League permutations: Champions League place confirmed, what an Arsenal win would mean

Hennessey said from the beginning that he did not know what a Nazi salute was, something which the panel backed up, saying "when cross-examined about this Mr Hennessey displayed a very considerable - one might even say lamentable - degree of ignorance about anything to do with Hitler, Fascism and the Nazi regime.

"Regrettable though it may be that anyone should be unaware of so important a part of our own and world history, we do not feel we should therefore find he was not telling the truth about this.

"All we would say (at the risk of sounding patronising) is that Mr Hennessey would be well advised to familiarise himself with events which continue to have great significance to those who live in a free country."
