The reason we are holding European elections after UK voted for Brexit

With European elections taking place next week many will are still questioning the UK's involvement considering its plans to leave the European Union.

The ballot, which takes place every five years, takes place in the UK on Thursday, May 23 and people in the South West will be voting to elect six Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) to represent the region within the EU .

Votes will then be counted and results announced on the evening of Sunday, May 26 and the early hours of Monday.

Despite Britain's plans to leave the EU following the referendum in 2016, it still has to take part in the elections.

The Prime Minister had initially been against taking part in the elections and had hoped Britain would be able to leave the EU well before they took place.

But with Parliament unable to agree on the best - or any - way forward in securing a withdrawal agreement Theresa May was forced to seek another Brexit delay.

Under terms agreed with EU leaders in Brussels, the UK was granted an extension until October 31.

And one of the conditions in granting the delay was that the UK had to take part in the European elections.

As well as this, legal obligations means that British citizens still have the right to be represented in the European parliament as Britain is still a part of the EU.

If the vote didn't take place in the UK, Britain would automatically face a no-deal Brexit on June 1.

However, if Theresa May does get a deal through before the end of June, the MEPs chosen to represent the UK will not take their seats.

This is because those elected do not take up their seats until the beginning of July.

The south west has six MEPs and they are currently held by William Dartmouth, Ashley Fox, Julia reid, Julie Girling, Clare Moody and Molly Scott Cato.
