The reason Tottenham will benefit from Jose Mourinho's spell at Man United

Former Chelsea and West Ham striker Carlton Cole has identified how Jose Mourinho has changed from his spell with Manchester United, which will help him at Tottenham.

The Portuguese boss has rejuvenated the North London side since taking charge, leading the Lilywhites to three consecutive victories in all competitions - prior to last night's defeat to United at Old Trafford.

While there is still work to do, made clear by the fact that Spurs have conceded two goals in each of Mourinho's four games in charge, the early signs have been positive.

So far, Mourinho has not encountered the problems that plagued his time at Old Trafford and Cole believes that this is because he has learnt some key lessons.

As he identified, Mourinho had to change his approach in the media to fit with the modern era of football and must also learn not to be sucked in by the media.

When Jose was at Manchester United it was a different culture. There was Pogba and Lukaku and the Rashfords, the young lads who were more exposed to social media," he told 888Sport.

"There is a way to handle the younger generation today and I’m learning that every day when I go into training. It’s crazy with social media and all of that stuff.

"What Mourinho has learnt is how to handle that part of football.

"Where he used to protect his players from the media and take the brunt of it if they under-achieved now players don’t need that cover. And what he has learnt is you just have to go with the flow man.

"You can’t control everything.

"When he was my manager I used to see him diverting the attention away from his players.

"That was very clever. But players are so exposed now so he needs to change how he handles things.

"He also needs to stop biting as well because the press are always luring him in."
