Sergio Reguilon has been left out of Spain's squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
La Roja boss Luis Enrique released his squad this morning ahead of Spain's first three qualifiers, against Greece, Georgia and Kosovo ahead of next year's tournament in Qatar.
Having amassed five caps so far and made the last squad, Tottenham's Reguilon would have hoped to make the Spain squad this time around, but his name was absent from the list.
Instead, Enrique recalled Barcelona star Jordi Alba - who has been in excellent form - at left-back along with Valencia starter Jose Gaya, who was very much expected to make the cut.
At right-back, there is only Manchester City star Pedro Porro, who represented Spain seven times at the under-21 level, has been called up for the first time having impressed on a loan spell with Sporting CP this season.
The 21-year-old has made 29 appearances across all competitions, scoring four times and assisting once as he looks to impress Pep Guardiola from afar.
Porro has been with Manchester City since 2019 when he joined from sister club Girona for £11million.
Enrique's selection of only one right-back will raise eyebrows, particularly given he will now have to draw upon a centre-back or midfielder should he need cover for right-back, rather than drawing upon Reguilon to play on the other side to his usual position.
Though, Enrique has admitted that right-back has caused him more headaches than any other position.
"Only Pedro Porro comes at right-back. We have many doubts in this position, I have doubted it until the end," he said in his press conference.
"But with the players that we have, we will adapt to other players to play here, either through a change of position or system."
Enrique also affirmed that this squad may be different from his Euro 2020 squad, and that Reguilon - who has only played five of Tottenham's last 10 Premier League games due to injury - still has a chance to break in.
"It's certain that, for this list, there are players that are not here - Adama (Traore), Kepa (Arrizabalaga), (Mikel) Merino, Reguilon - and could be in the Euros," he added.
