The reason supermarkets are still running out of eggs

First it was antibacterial gel to fly off the supermarket shelves when the UK lockdown was first announced in March, then toilet rolls, then pasta.

By April, going food shopping at Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons and Aldi was like a post-apocalyptic scavenger hunt as a result of shoppers panic buying.

While toilet rolls are back in our shops and in plentiful supply, there is one item shoppers are still struggling to get hold off, reports My London.

You can probably guess, eggs.

More than two months on, buying just half a dozen of the humble food is still a problem and you will be lucky to find them down the aisle.

The British Egg Industry Council, which represents egg farmers, has shed light on why eggs have become like gold dust.

They put it down to the "unprecedented demand" for eggs and the fact consumers are using more eggs as they are at home more during lockdown.

A spokesperson said: " Consumer demand for eggs has been on the up for a number of years but the industry has been dealing with a period of unprecedented demand.

"While the initial panic buying of food has ceased, easing some of the pressure on the supply chain, we are seeing consumers use more eggs at home due to the Covid-19 lockdown, and the industry has been doing its utmost to ensure eggs get to shops as quickly as possible."

To try to lessen the problem, the council said some supermarkets have been selling liquid egg.

"Eggs have been re-directed from food service and manufacturing to help meet demand, and you will see cartons of liquid egg on sale in certain supermarkets to help alleviate some of the issues," they added.
