The reason Spurs delayed their Fernando Llorente announcement and what it means for Troy Parrott

Tottenham Hotspur announced Fernando Llorente's exit from the club on Monday, more than two months after he left the club, and many fans had been wondering what took so long.

The 34-year-old joined Serie A side Napoli on a free transfer on Monday, with his Spurs contract having expired on June 30.

Both Spurs and Llorente waited until his move was sealed before making any form of announcement.

"After two wonderful seasons, today I say goodbye to Tottenham," he wrote across his social media accounts. "It was a pleasure to wear this shirt and wherever I go there will be always a space in my heart for Tottenham and for their fans. I wish you all the best for this season and for the future! Thanks. #COYS"

Tottenham posted a video with a collection of his best moments for the club, including some important goals and assists in the Champions League last season on Spurs' journey to the final.

"Thank you for providing us with some unbelievable memories, @llorentefer19! Good luck at @sscnapoli," was the club message alongside the video.

The reason for the delay between the club and Llorente's announcement, two months after his contract expired, was that until he signed on the dotted line for Napoli there remained a slim chance that the experienced Spaniard might return.

Spurs put a one-year contract offer on the table for him, reduced from his original terms, which was there should he not find a better deal elsewhere.

Llorente was courted by a few clubs across Europe, including being linked to Manchester United, before agreeing terms with Napoli and the announcements could be made.

The Spaniard's announcement also means that Troy Parrott will continue to be a striking option in Mauricio Pochettino's first team squad.

The talented 17-year-old has been training with the first team full-time this season, having impressed in pre-season.

football.london had asked Pochettino out in Shanghai in the summer whether Parrott would become part of the first team squad during this campaign.

"Today, yes [he could be part of the squad], tomorrow, I don’t know," said the Spurs manager. "We’re working with the [young] players, trying to provide the best platform and possibility for them to perform and be comfortable with the first team.

"He’s still so young but we’ll see what happens at the end of the transfer window. if we have the squad that we have today, of course he's going to have the possibility to be with the first team."

Spurs have not added to their strikers in the summer window with Pochettino impressed by the young Irishman's mature displays against the likes of Juventus, United, Real Madrid and Inter Milan and their experienced international defenders.

Despite his age, Parrott was called up by Ireland boss Mick McCarthy to his provisional squad for their matches this fornight.

He has since dropped down to the U21 squad as they have an important set of European Championship qualifiers and is set to make his debut for them, but remains on standby for the senior squad should he be needed.

Former Spurs defender Ledley King is a fan of Parrott and believes he can be a star if he keeps his head down and works hard.

"It's up to him [how good he can be]. He's in a great place where we have a manager almost wants young players to give him that problem, to come into the first team and that's not always the case elsewhere," the former Tottenham defender told football.london.

"There are a lot of other teams and managers who look to buy first rather than trying to develop a player.

"Troy is an exciting prospect at the moment and I think what we like about him is his work ethic. He's one of those players who rolls up his sleeves and puts in a shift for the team, regardless of how well he's playing. He's always putting in that work rate.

"I know the manager likes him and there are a few other young lads and it's an exciting time for them as well. It's great to know that if they do perform and keep progressing then there is a future for them at the club."

He added: "Physically he's a big strong lad for his age. He's got a maturity about his game which is great to see at such a young age.

"He's not fazed to be playing against one of the best teams in the world and one of the best defenders in the world in Bonucci [against Juventus], so that was great to see."

Parrott is likely to make his competitive Spurs debut in the Carabao Cup third round match at Colchester United on September 24 and has been travelling to Premier League matches as the squad's 19th man in case of illness or injury.
