The reason Rangers are wearing a retro kit as throwback shirt makes its debut

Rangers debuted their special edition retro home kit against St Mirren on Wednesday night.

The minimalist shirt is a throwback to the strips of old and was snapped up eagerly by fans following its launch in October.

But it hasn't been seen on the pitch among Steven Gerrard 's first-team - until now.

The Ibrox side donned the throwback Castore effort for their Betfred Cup quarter-final clash with the Buddies.

It's believed the kit has been designated for outings during cup competitions and wasn't worn in the last round against Falkirk as there would have been a colour clash.

It's unusual to see a strip without at least one sponsor in this day and age but Rangers' commercial director James Bisgrove revealed the club's partners were understanding.

He said: "We entered into the new Castore partnership with a great deal of excitement around their commitment to develop bespoke designed and innovative products for Rangers players and our global fan base.

"This retro edition kit is an exciting demonstration of this commitment and its classy retro approach combines both high performance with a design that celebrates the generations of success that Rangers Football Club has always been famous for.

"We’re grateful that our committed club partners 32Red,   The Energy Check, SEKO, Tomket Tyres and   Utilita have been supportive in enabling this strip to come to life in a true retro fashion."
