The reason Paulo Gazzaniga was not sent off vs Chelsea for 'kung-fu kick' on Marcos Alonso

You could say Paulo Gazzaniga was a lucky boy on Sunday.

He did not have a good afternoon at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium against Chelsea, giving away a penalty that helped the Blues trake a 2-0 lead into half-time that they held onto in the second period.

The Argentinian was lucky in the fact that he was not sent off for conceding the penalty from which Willian doubled the Blues' lead.

Gazzaniga suffered a rush of blood to the head as he steamed out of his goal and attempted, inexplicably, to volley a ball over the top away, rather than catching it.

Jose Mourinho full press conference after Chelsea loss

The keeper completely missed the ball and succeeded only in taking out Marcos Alonso with a kung-fu style kick.

Referee Anthony Taylor initially awarded a free-kick to Spurs, but the decision was overturned by VAR and a spot-kick was awarded.

Gazzaniga was shown a yellow card for the foul, but Chelsea boss Frank Lampard said afterwards that he felt the keeper should have been sent off.

Lampard said: "I think the penalty should have been a red card, he has flown at him. I don’t think he means to do it so I can understand why it is not, it is probably fair."

In the Sky Sports studio, Graeme Souness said the challenge deserved to be in the MMA octagon.

So why was Gazzaniga not sent off?

The rules over penalties and red cards were changed in 2016, with the  previous 'triple-punishment' rule of a red card and a p0enalty relaxed.

Under the new rules players committing accidental fouls that deny a goalscoring chance were punished with a yellow card as well as the spot-kick.

Only deliberate fouls incur a red card and because Gazzaniga made a genuine attempt for the ball - he completely missed his flying kick - he was not dismissed.
