The reason Odion Ighalo rejected Tottenham to seal surprise Man United loan deal on deadline day

Manchester United pulled off argubaly the most surprising transfer in the January window with the signing of Odion Ighalo on deadline day.

The former Watford striker returns to the Premier League on a temporary basis as he will spend the remainder of the season on loan at Old Trafford, but could win a permanent deal should he impress Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Speaking of the Red Devils head coach, he delivered his reaction after the deal was confirmed.

Tottenham transfer window verdict

"Odion is an experienced player. He will come in and give us an option of a different type of centre-forward for the short spell he’s staying with us," Solskjaer said.

"A great lad and very professional, he will make the most of his time here."

Given this is one of the most surprising transfers on deadline day in recent years, there has been plenty of reaction to it.

Naturally, Chelsea and Arsenal supporters couldn't risk the opportunity to mock their United counterparts on social media - with many amused by the fact some Red Devils fans were adamant it is a good signing.

Meanwhile, it was reported that Tottenham Hotspur made an attempt to sign the Nigeria international as they look for cover for the injured Harry Kane.

However, Fabrizio Romano claimed Ighalo opted for a move to Old Trafford over Spurs because he's supported United since he was a kid.

Choosing a team playing in the Europa League over a side in the knockout stages of the Champions League might come as a surprise to some, but Ighalo simply couldn't turn down the Red Devils.

"I don't think I will be moving but I'm not sure I'd say no if United called,"  Ighalo told the Sun in 2016, per the IBTimes.

"They were my team growing up. I loved watching Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke on TV.

"They were my idols and playing at Old Trafford has always been a dream."
