The reason Michy Batshuayi is only on the bench for Crystal Palace vs Southampton

Michy Batshuayi will have to settle for a place among the substitutes for Crystal Palace's first game of the Premier League season against Southampton.

The striker sealed his loan move from Chelsea after extending his contract at Stamford Bridge by a further year until 2022 - a decision that will help protect his value to the Blues.

Batshuayi was in action for Belgium in midweek, scoring twice in a 5-1 victory over Iceland before flying back to London to seal the transfer to Palace, which was announced on Thursday.

Despite being familiar with plenty of the squad following his previous loan spell at Selhurst Park in the first half of 2019, Batshuayi had just one training session with the rest of the team on Friday.

While Roy Hodgson has been left short of options in the squad due to an injury crisis, they are well-stocked in attack.

Wilf Zaha and Jordan Ayew start up front, with Andros Townsend and Jeff Schlupp playing wide.

Batshuayi is joined on the bench by Palace's other new attacking signing Eberechi Eze, who has played just 45 minutes of pre-season action after picking up a groin injury against Charlton.

Hodgson revealed that Eze is fit to play a part in the squad, but due to the transfer this summer and the injury, he is lacking match sharpness and thus is among the substitutes.

Hodgson will be hoping that either of the duo can come on and help the team later in the game up against a notoriously physical Southampton side, who Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer described as one of the fittest teams in the Premier League back in July.
