The reason Mesut Ozil started ahead of Reiss Nelson for Arsenal against Watford

Unai Emery has revealed why he opted to recall Mesut Ozil to the Arsenal starting line-up for their trip to Watford.

The German playmaker hasn't started a league game for the Gunners this season but he was brought into the team for the clash at Vicarage Road.

With Alexandre Lacazette out until October with an ankle complaint, Emery chose to use his German playmaker to supply the firepower of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Nicolas Pepe.

Ozil hasn't been fit and has sat out the Gunners' opening four fixtures in the Premier League, amid claims he isn't in Emery's long-term plans.

However, with Emery opting to use a diamond system in midfield, he was selected alongside Grant Xhaka, Matteo Guendouzi and Dani Ceballos in the engine room after impressing in training.

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the clash, the Arsenal boss said: "He trained with us in the position that he played with good performance.

"In some circumstance, we cannot play with him but now he's working, he's training with us for two, three weeks I think.

"Today, I think he can help us. Every player, they are very important, the player in the first 11, the players on the bench and we need them all."

One complaint from Arsenal fans was the balance in midfield against Tottenham Hotspur, a fortnight ago.

On that occasion, Emery opted for Guendouzi, Xhaka and Lucas Torreira as his midfield trio.

Ceballos, however, made a real impact after being introduced from the bench, as a more creative mind in the centre of the park.

However, with Ozil, Ceballos, Aubameyang and Pepe all in the team to face Watford, it's clear Emery has opted for a different route for this fixture.
