The reason Maurizio Sarri does not want to start Callum Hudson-Odoi for Chelsea

Callum Hudson-Odoi earned his first England start when on international duty, before he has made his first Premier League start for Chelsea.

The 18-year-old has had more joy in the Europa League this season but has only made six appearances from the bench in the league.

With the likes of Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool linked to the youngster, Maurizio Sarri has came under pressure for not giving Hudson-Odoi an opportunity. That is only increasing since the Blues star's assist in the Three Lions 5-1 over Montenegro.

Former Chelsea and Celtic midfielder Craig Burley can only think of one reason Sarri is yet to be convinced.

The ex-Scotland manager said: "It seems Sarri is reluctant for some reason. Maybe it’s the defensive part of his game, ‘cos it can’t be the attacking part of his game.

"But he sees something he doesn’t want to give him more minutes for.

"It’s a difficult one for the lad, but if it continues in the manner it is then he needs to get out of there. He needs to get out and go and get minutes.

"Germany’s been mooted and Germany has been a great place for younger kids from all different countries to go in.

"I think to get an opportunity, the Bundesliga has shown itself to be one of the best platforms for skillful, talented kids to be given their head and that’s a good opportunity."

The Blues face Cardiff this weekend and with Pedro and Willian both not having international duty to contend with over the last two weeks it seems like it will be hard for Hudson-odoi to break into the team once again.

While the academy product showed good form against Czech Republic and Montenegro, it may not be something his coach invests too much thought in.

Sarri didn't hold a high opinion of the World Cup and with an even shorter period for teams to be together in qualifiers, the Italian might not be too impressed by Hudson-Odoi's exploits.

"I didn’t see anything in the World Cup," Sarri said on January 11. "I didn’t see a match in the World Cup. I don’t like the national team because there isn’t anything to learn.

"It is a usual position, every coach thinks like me. It is unusual to say it.

"It is impossible to arrange a team very well in 30 days. Every team in the World Cup will lose against the top-level club teams in every match.

"I think that is normal because in a club you have time to organise a team, but in the national team you have no time so it is very difficult to see an organised team in the Euros or World Cup."
