The reason Jose Mourinho has apologised to the Tottenham fans despite first win as boss

Jose Mourinho's first game in charge of Tottenham could not have gone much better.

Well, it could, they could have not conceded the two goals they did in the final 20 minutes of the match.

Spurs were cruising at 3-0 up and could have made it four or five, with Lucas Moura and Harry Kane, both of whom scored, missing good chances to extend the lead further.

But Tottenham walked about with three points - their first on the road since January - and moved into the top half of the table as a result, although still a long way off the top four.

There are still plenty of things to work on, but for Mourinho, after just three days with the squad, it was a good start.

So it may come as a surprise that the former Chelsea and Manchester United boss felt the need to apologise to the supporters.

And not because of the two goals they conceded either, but for something he did not do - applaud them after the game.

Speaking to Spurs TV, Mourinho said: "At the end of the game I didn't want to go to our fans as I felt I shouldn't, it's about the players, not about me, so apologies for that.

"A few thousand were there and right behind the team, enjoying, understanding and supporting - now they are as happy as we are."
