The reason Jesse Lingard isn't playing for England despite Manchester United return

Jesse Lingard did not join up with England because he is continuing his rehab from injury.

England boss Gareth Southgate was surprised when Lingard, omitted from his squad for the Euro 2020 qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Montenegro, played 86 minutes of Manchester United ’s 2-1 FA Cup defeat to Wolves.

Lingard’s appearance against Wolves suggested the attacker was fully fit and therefore able to join up with the England squad for the Euro 2020 double-headers.

But the 26-year-old needs continued reconditioning to consolidate match fitness and is currently on a club-guided fitness programme in Dubai.

Lingard broke down after returning from injury too soon when he came on as a first-half sub in a 0-0 draw with Liverpool and was forced off before the break, with United determined to avoid that happening again.

England start their campaign on Friday night but can also qualify through the UEFA Nations League route in the summer.
